WTC Steel In Place for Park Dedication

The City of Westerville will dedicate First Responders Park on Monday, September 6, 2010.  The ceremony will feature the public unveiling of piece"C-40"-steel originally from the north tower of the World Trade Center-in its final and permanent location.  
 
Westerville's First Responders Park honors local professionals in police, fire and emergency dispatch who work with Westerville citizens in the response to a crisis, matter of public safety or emergency.
 
Congressman Pat Tiberi, WCMH-TV anchor Cabot Rea and Westerville Mayor Kathy Cocuzzi will take part in the dedication ceremony which will begin at 2pm.

WPD Hosts Cops &
Kids Day

The 17th annual “Cops & Kids”, hosted by the Westerville Division of Police will be held Sunday, September 12th from 10:30-3:30 at Hoff Woods Park, 656 McCorkle Blvd. Admission, refreshments, prizes, and demonstrations are all free to the public. This year, the event will host music, SWAT displays, helicopters, Dare cars, K-9 Units, and the “Dunk-a-Cop” tank.

A free souvenir gift will be given to the first 1200 kids. This event will go on, rain or shine, so make sure to stop by and join all of the fun!

Join or Renew OHS to Benefit Hanby House

Ohio Historical Society member- ships can now be purchased or renewed through Hanby House, Westerville's museum, commemorating the life and work of Bishop William Hanby, a Methodist Minister, and his son Benjamin, a composer of many Civil War-era songs. 

In a pilot membership sales program, managed OHS sites can sell OHS memberships and earn a percentage of the sales.  Annual individual and family memberships are $35 and $55 respectively, with the option of a subcription to TIMELINE for an additional $30.  History Lover and Supporter membership levels are also available.

To complete an application for a new or renewed membership, stop by Hanby House, 160 West Main Street, Westerville on weekends between 1PM and 4PM.  Applications can be received by mail by sending a request to hanbyhouse@yahoo.com.  All completed applications need to be returned to Hanby House for submission to OHS.

Whether purchasing a membership for yourself or as a gift for others, this is an easy way to support Westerville Historical Society's efforts to preserve Hanby House.  Questions can be directed to Pam Allen, Hanby House Site Manager at 740-548-5488.

Ohio Chautauqua Returns to Westerville Next Year

With Mount Carmel St. Ann’s as the presenting sponsor, the Ohio Humanities Council is bringing Chautauqua back to Westerville in 2011. Free nightly performances will run June 30 through July 4, with evening and daytime programs.

In 2011, Chautauqua will recognize the 150th Anniversary of the Civil War with a wide-range of activities for children and adults. During first-person presentations, actors will portray historic characters such as, Abraham Lincoln, Harriet Tubman, and others.

Dog Days '10 a Record Setter

For dogs and their people, Uptown Westerville was definitely the place to be on Friday, August 27th.

4th Friday: Dog Days of Summer drew a crowd of approximately 11,400 people, making it the largest 4th Friday in event history.

Westerville Visitors & Convention Bureau Executive Director Jeff Hartnell said key factors in the record-breaking attendance were great weather, partnerships with the Capital Area Humane Society and Captivating Canines and support from local merchants and the City of Westerville, "All joining forces to help make this Dog Days a successful community event where area folks could experience the “fun side” to being part of Westerville."

This year's event was sponsored by Hometown Service Center.
